as a good habit, when arriving at a new space, let’s present ourselves first. And this is a new place with some old friends and acquaintances but most new to each other. As our goal is to run a shared online meeting service based in BigBlueButton firstly oriented at and produced by people and organisations from the Commons and Social and Solidarity Economy, We expect to see many likeminded people here
In case you doubt what values we could possibly share as “likeminded” people, check in the About page at http://meet.coop.
When presenting yourself, you’re encouraged to mention things like your relation to these commons cooperative principles, where you work, in what networks you’re involved, that’ll help each of us connect much better. It is not necessary to get really personal - this is a public forum as you’ll know - but you are free to do so.
Hi, it’s me, Wouter Tebbens, born in The Netherlands, involved mainly in the Barcelona-based multistakeholder coop femProcomuns (meaning: “we do/make commons” in Catalan) and the Free Knowledge Institute.
My values coincide or overlap with the Cooperative Principles that we defined at About Meet.coop and I commit myself to contribute to this amazing project and community.
happy to be here and get to know you better
hope to see you soon in the next online meeting,
Wouter
My name is Yasuaki Kudo (Yasu). I’m from Yugawara, Japan. I’m 43 years-old, spent most of my working life as an employee of investor-driven companies, including 10 years at a major American investment bank as a computer programmer.
I have been very interested in worker cooperatives for the past few years; visited Mondragon worker coop in 2016 and have had contacts with folks from Japanese worker cooperatives.
I am very excited about meet.coop - I can see that we might be able to create a great model of platform cooperativism, if we free ourselves to do what comes most naturally from us, thus being able to combine all necessary skills, the know-how and the spirit.
I’m David Jacovkis from Barcelona. I’m a colleague of Wouter’s at the femProcomuns coop and the Free Knowledge Institute. I mostly do technical work (infrastructure and systems integration) but I also enjoy writing and advocacy.
I don’t have much time these days so I may be mostly lurking around here, but I’m very happy to contribute in any way I can!
Hi All,
I’m Oli from The Open Co-op.
We have organised several conferences in London on platform co-ops and related subjects…
We’re hoping to hos this year’s OPEN event on BBB via meet.coop
I’m Ian from GreenNet. GreenNet is based in London, though I work for a distance for GreenNet from Valencia, Spain.
GreenNet is a workers’ collective that has provided hosting and connectivity services for almost 35 years. We provide web and email hosting, as well as NextCloud installs and other online services to organisations, activist groups, ethical businesses and individuals.
In the cotext of the Coronavirus pandemic, we’ve of course been seeing lots of demand for videoconferencing services. We have set up a public Jitsi Meet server at https://vc.greennet.org.uk. We are interested in further developing our video conferencing offerings, and so far have worked with Jitsi Meet because we are familiar with the software and it’s relatively easy to deploy. But we’re interested in exploring BBB, as we’ve heard that it works well in comparison with Jitsi Meet. BBB has much more demanding hosting requirements (‘bare metal’ server) than Jitsi, so I think that with BBB it really makes sense to collaborate with other organisations and groups like meet.coop is doing.
Anyway, I hope to be able to participate in this project and contribute some time and resources on behalf of GreenNet.
Hi / I’m here as a user of platformed tools for community organising - where the community usually has some kind of radical research&development, practice&theory purpose: lots of document coproduction and sharing. You could say I’m a ‘methodologist’. Or anthropologist. Or codesigner of work infrastructures.
My orientation is commoning as distinct from (not opposed to!) coop - so: production of-and-in cultural commons is at the core. And stewarding in commons, at the core of that.
In recent years I’ve been co-convenor of a network around the vision and work of English radical economist Robin Murray (an inventor of Fairtrade, economics of waste, municipal-civil collaboration in regional economic development). So, ‘making the living economy’ is at the core of my work. And developing a distributed college - a cultural commons - of activist ‘formacion’, with a pattern language of activist practice at the heart: to be constructed. Would love to have folks talk to me about that
Hi all, I am Frédéric Sultan, member of Remix the commons. I am facilitating activities and networking for developing the culture and politicization of commoning, mostly in France and Europe. Remix started as a collective in 2009 and became a formal organization in 2018. commonscamp.cc and politiquesdescommuns.cc can give you a idea of what we are doing.
Oh, nearly missed this one. I put a little in this comment but I’m Luke, currently working with Autonomic and trying to put some time into helping with the technical infrastructure work. Inspired by the project and seems like a good way to build more connections with other good people. Lots of info and links to chase up just in this thread Based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Also help organise local initiatives like Varia and BioBulkBende.
Hi all! I’m José Luis from Camba.coop, software development workers cooperative from Argentina. We are working and have worked with many cooperatives internationally and are federated in FACTTIC. Nice to hear about this project.
Hi Everyone - I’m Jamie from May First Movement Technology - we are an international membership based movement organization with a bi-national (US/Mexico) leadership. Altough we have operated democratically for many years we formalized our coop by-laws last year. We’re enthusiastic about a non-corporate meeting platform.
I am Camille de Wit, working in Friends of the Earth International. We are a grassroots environmental network of 75 members in the world. As you can imagine we have an lot of online calls, and most of them need interpretation so I am happy to participate if it’s possible to a BBB platform that allows to have a smooth experience of simultaneous interpretation for our interpreters and participants.
