Feedback on jitsi.meet.coop

CC @kawaiipunk I didn’t wanna spam the October Update thread with more random feedback, so opening this thread.

Do you have plans to keep running and updating an open JitSi installation btw?

:white_check_mark: Generally able to run a 1h meeting with 7 participants

 Maybe a JitSi bug, but several participants could not see each-other on the participants list / video feeds. They received each other’s audio streams, so we knew we were all connected. So while the meeting started with 7 participants, most people experienced mysterious disappearance of other participants, and we ended the meeting being able to see just 3-4 out of 7 (but everyone was connected fine). I have NOT tried this on any other JitSi installation.

:person_shrugging: I experience meetings that freeze while I speak. So I have to re-join. This happens rarely and is not related to the installation itself (I’ve tried it on other JitSi installations, too!)

Thank you for opening this Benjamin! I’m not seeing these issues personally but I’m also interested in the future of jitsi.meet.coop as Social Coop is using it and I’m using it for some personal meetings, and I personally much prefer it to the previous BigBlueButton solution

I hope it can be maintained and supported if possible.

My main experience with meet.coop’s BBB is great, it’s been more stable than any JitSi installations I’ve tried. I wish JitSi had an ETL release (or something more stable) because JitSi is a great alternative to BBB’s many features and heavier interface.

I think if meet.coop runs both platforms, it’s a HUGE win: There will be a platform available for running professional events and a lighter, simpler platform for day-to-day meetings.

Maybe the natural next step for jitsi.meet.coop would be to add some login protection: Jitsi Authentication Best Practices - JWT, LDAP Guide . On that note, there is a company in Denmark that hosts JitSi with customized login solutions.

If folks are interested, we can propose to keep it! meet.coop is a co-op so once we get some sort of democratic structure back up and running, members can propose next steps.

Would you folks be ok if we added the meet.coop SSO to that server? It’s better for moderation purposes and obviously ads value to becoming a meet.coop member.

I set the instance up in order for there to be a supported platform for our members before the new de.meet.coop was deployed.

That would be amazing!

FWIW I really appreciate having an open Jitsi instance – it really reduces the friction towards cooperation as anybody can drop in in any room anytime, regardless of credentials, simply after agreeing on which URL to use. I’ve used this to great effect in Social.coop and for personal calls. I understand if it can’t be kept open, but an open instance would be my personal preference if viable.

(I’m guessing Jitsi could be configured to maybe limit call length unless you sign in? I think I’ve seen this in some open Jitsi instances but I haven’t checked in depth.)

@flancian ok I won’t put SSO on it for now. This is all great feedback for the future.
